marketing people are jerks like that...
should be a picture of the PMS clan shooting guys in the junk
now THAT... would be showin' em

Yeah...bummer. It's a shame that the market works that way, but not all gals are as talented or interesting as you and Tina. I was always impressed that the two of you love and play all kinds of games, not just the gender demographic titles. Unfortunately, most gals gravitate to those titles, and marketers target them. We've come so far, but still have a long way to go.

The add wizards who came up with that one are clueless. All girls like pink and the Little Mermaid? Is that a HILLARY DUFF game I see on the rack? Hopefully people like the ones who made this display will eventually figure out that girls like to blow up aliens and beat down cops just like the boys. My kind of ladies, yo.

Ad execs come up with promotional displays like that for one reason: they sell more games. Unfortunately, the majority of our culture still buys into gender stereotypes...

"Lets show the boys what the girls can do"
Yeah....from inside the kitchen. Amirite?
Posted by: +J | November 17, 2006 at 11:55 PM
well i for one applaud the store for letting women know there are games for them to play although i think they should make more reality specific games for women and young girls to learn from like for example..........
shut up and only speak when spoken to extreme redneck eidition.
lose weight before i dump you for your hotter sister/friend with touch screen functionality
Wii's get in that kitchen and cook bitch (w/ wiimote extras)
and my all time personal favorite
Juggling Broads

I have to believe real women play real games, not Bratz and Barbie.
Besides, nothing hotter than a gal who isn't afraid to throw down in some GoW.

Wow, the people who thought that up are REALLY STUPID! What, no one there ever heard of "The Frag Dolls"? I know girls who play "Soul Caliber III", and "Devil May Cry." Not to mention my favorite video game heroin is Samus from the Metroid games. They should take that down, it's giving gamers a bad name!

Yikes.. i remember seeing that in a few retail stores. Quite an eyesore. (c'mon we know they can do better)
Hopefully there will be a time, when such retail stores can actually have a decent set of titles that may attract women more often. But not like this.
Posted by: kadosho | November 24, 2006 at 06:16 AM
HAHA that is not cool.. but a bit funny. Those are not the type of games I have ever seen anyone want.
And what are those gils doing playing videogames anyway? Need to be makeing me a sandwhich! They need cooking videogames, or sewing ones. That is what the girls need haha.
No not really, but that seems to be the marketing department's thinking. This is sad. Fight the good fight Laura.

Laura
Hello, and i hope youve had a wonderful and very filling Thanksgiving. Very full in turkey, ham, or what other food you seem to like at this time of year. I figured since i had some free time I should stop by your site and give you the usual fairs for this time of year.
Posted by: Jason Brooks | November 26, 2006 at 02:07 PM
Hope your Thanksgiving was good and not borring as mine.
I remember at GDC we had a talk about girls in games. We agree, they should be making games for everyone, reguardless of race and sex. Look at QuakeGirl Con. I am sure id software had no idea how many girls played Quake. @,@;

+J, whoever you are...
don't be perpetratin'
Posted by: -J | November 29, 2006 at 11:16 AM
Now if you could just use the DS stylus in "that's so raven" to rub off the extra weight that Raven Symone has put on since the cosby show, it would really teach these girls the life lessons that thousands of ads and marketing schemes already have: Anorexia rocks! (or "anorexia is phat" if you want to get into allegories)
Add one more check mark to the "why gaming sucks today" board.

Wtf, as a girl who loves to play video games, seeing a stand like that up with..pathetic excuse for video games geared towards me makes me want to kill myself. Taht'll be the day when I sit down and play freakin barbie.
I must go hug my copy of grand theft auto and tell it everything is gonna be ok now.

I am writing my thesis about the gender differences in the industry. The marketing strategies definitely need to be restructured.
Posted by: Yotagirl | December 03, 2006 at 08:47 AM
Wow. Seeing that makes me so happy I no longer work for that company anymore. This is not insulting to female gamers. This is insulting to ALL gamers.
Posted by: Fatal Fungus | December 03, 2006 at 07:30 PM
LOL
did I see a game about cooking?
Laura thats stupid, girls don't have to like cooking games. I wish people weren't so closed minded about things.
Why can't girls like shooting people to death in counter strike and halo?
Because people are closed minded, stupid, jerks....
Posted by: JIZZ MASTA FLEX | December 04, 2006 at 11:17 AM
And furthermore I want to go and trash that stupid sign.
Really pisses me off how girls have to be feminine. I prefer girls like you who don't fit the typical stereotype of what is a girl.
Example:
Im pretty sure pink is not your favorite color.
Posted by: JIZZ MASTA FLEX | December 04, 2006 at 11:35 AM
One last thing:
I would rather have a girl be my friend that I can relate to.
I hate girls that want nothing more than to play with barbies and watch the little mermaid.
Posted by: JIZZ MASTA FLEX | December 04, 2006 at 11:39 AM
yeah that's really lame. Not that I would condone telling that target age group (say, 5-10ish) to get Gears of War (how I love thee) but uh. Still. So ridiculous. I'm sure that marketing ploy works though with unaware grandparents and such.
